The original German Third Reich Nazi Luftwaffe dagger was adopted for wear by German officers and certain high ranking Non-Commissioned Officer's in 1937. The fittings were generally produced in a gray finish , although nickel or silver plating was available. The dagger had an aluminum top pommel featuring swastika on both sides, and a matching crossguard which depicted an eagle in flight clutching a swastika in his talons. The grip was white or colored celluloid. The steel scabbard usually was matching finish with pebble panels and oak leaved lower section. These daggers are often found with a portepee , a decorative tassel wrapped about the grip.
